Anthropic will commit 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund

Anthropic is setting up a fund with part of its shares for donations and payments, for instance to workers hit by AI. Its stake will grow if the company's value rises.

Anthropic announced on 18 October, in a statement, that it will commit part of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund. Subject to stockholder approval, the fund gets 5% now, and the board may add 2% for every 50% rise in the company's value above a baseline figure.

The fund might donate to nonprofits or make direct payments to specific groups. The company cites the impact of AI on jobs, an issue it says it has already committed $200 million to. It will be a limited liability company owned by Anthropic and, the company says, its shares won't be used for lobbying or political giving.

Counting what its co-founders and employees have pledged, Anthropic estimates that about 20% of its shares will go to the public good. The fund's details will be published in the coming months.
